Project Overview
When you step into Calico Ghost Town, you expect to feel transported to another era. Weathered wood façades, historic storefronts, and rugged desert surroundings all contribute to its Old West charm. For ISE Structural Engineers, the mission was simple in concept—but meaningful in execution: renovate and maintain key structures throughout the town while preserving the authentic experience for visitors.
Project Type: Renovation & Structural Maintenance
Location: Calico Ghost Town, San Bernardino County, CA
Services Provided: Structural assessment, repair detailing, code compliance upgrades, site support
Structural Support Behind the Scenes at Calico Ghost Town
ISE provided structural engineering support for a series of targeted renovations across multiple areas within Calico, helping ensure the site remains safe and welcoming for regular tourist use. Work included improvements to:
- The Old Miners Cafe
- The Pottery Shop
- The Silver Bowl Amphitheatre
- Various general site structures and repairs
These were not large-scale historical retrofits or structural overhauls. Instead, they were thoughtful upgrades designed to maintain functionality, meet current code requirements, and extend the life of the buildings—without disrupting the historic aesthetic.

Preserving the spirit of the Old West—ISE’s structural upgrades at Calico Ghost Town ensure these iconic spaces remain safe, code-compliant, and ready to welcome visitors for years to come.
Blending New with Old
One of the most important aspects of the project was ensuring that all repairs blended seamlessly with the town’s existing character. While the structural solutions were modern and code-compliant, they needed to look intentional—almost invisible—within the Old West setting.
That meant designing repairs that supported safety and longevity while preserving the weathered, rustic appearance that defines Calico. The goal wasn’t to make structures look newly renovated. It was to make them feel like they’d always belonged.
Practical Solutions, Real-World Constraints
From an engineering standpoint, the structures themselves were relatively straightforward. The real challenge came from working within budget constraints. With limited funds available, priorities had to be carefully evaluated, and improvements focused on the most impactful and necessary repairs.
Rather than overcomplicating the approach, ISE delivered practical, cost-conscious solutions that addressed critical needs while respecting the project’s financial realities. It was about doing the most good with the resources available—keeping the town operational, safe, and enjoyable for visitors.
A Project with Personality
Beyond the technical scope, this project stood out because of the setting. Being able to walk through different spaces within Calico—experiencing the cafe, amphitheater, and shops firsthand—added a unique dimension to the work.
As the Structural Engineer of Record shared:
“The Calico project was a fun one overall. The structures were simple, but it was a cool project to be part of. You get to go out on site and see all the different spaces within Calico. It’s the kind of place you’d want to visit even outside of work.”
Projects like this remind us that structural engineering isn’t only about large-scale developments or complex systems. Sometimes, it’s about quietly reinforcing the places people gather, explore, and create memories—while making sure they remain safe for years to come.
