Oceanside Fire Station No. 1 has been recognized in Firehouse Magazine’s Station Design Awards for fire stations. This accolade underscores the project’s innovative design and engineering, which sets it atop fire station facilities nationwide.

As structural engineers for this project, the ISE team collaborated closely with architects and the City of Oceanside to create a facility that not only meets the operational demands of a modern fire station but also reflects the city’s commitment to safety and sustainability. The design ensures the station is equipped to handle modern firefighting equipment and emergency response for decades to come.

A Facility Designed for Modern Equipment

The Oceanside Fire Station No. 1 project involved replacing an outdated facility with a state-of-the-art station designed to support modern equipment and operations. Key structural considerations included:

• Apparatus Bay Design: The project required equipment bays built to accommodate larger, heavier ladder trucks, and other modern emergency vehicles. ISE’s structural design of the apparatus bays accounted for significant live loads, particularly in the floor slabs and support systems.
• High-Ceiling Spaces: Between apparatus bays and lobby spaces on the first floor, structural engineering challenges were overcome to support these wide, open spaces and support second-floor living quarters and office space. The structural system developed managed large spans without compromising stability or the structural integrity of the building.
• Integration of Rooftop Systems: Oceanside Fire Station No. 1 includes rooftop solar panels and other mechanical systems (e.g., HVAC, generators). The design was engineered appropriately to ensure that the roof can support these additional loads while meeting energy efficiency goals.
