ISE Structural Engineers is honored to provide pro-bono structural engineering services for an upcoming Gold Star Families Memorial Monument project in Rancho Cucamonga. This initiative, spearheaded by the Woody Williams Foundation (WWF), is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of Gold Star families who have lost loved ones in military service. ISE is partnering with Diversified Pacific and other stakeholders to manage and construct this meaningful project, ensuring it meets local engineering and construction standards.
Engineering Considerations for the Gold Star Memorial
As part of our role in this project, ISE Structural Engineers has reviewed the provided drawing package from WWF, dated June 10, 2022. These drawings outline the footing details that have been utilized in past installations across the country and are stamped by an engineer in Texas. However, since each project site has unique requirements, our team is working closely with the local sponsor to design and engineer the foundation to comply with local conditions and building codes.
One of the key considerations for this project is ensuring the structural integrity of the monument, particularly in relation to the weight and secure installation of the granite slabs that form the memorial. While an exact weight per slab is yet to be confirmed, we anticipate that each stone will be substantial, requiring a secure anchoring system to the foundation. ISE is evaluating options for base connections to ensure stability, longevity, and resistance to environmental factors such as wind loads and seismic activity.
Securing the Stones to the Foundation
Based on past installations and our expertise in structural engineering, there are a few primary methods to securely attach the monument’s granite slabs to the foundation:
- Embedded Anchors: Stainless steel or galvanized anchors embedded in the concrete foundation can provide a stable and secure connection.
- Epoxy and Mortar Bonding: A high-strength bonding agent can be used to further secure the stone in place, preventing movement over time.
- Mechanical Fastening: Some installations utilize mechanical fastening systems that integrate with the base plate, offering an additional layer of security.
We are in communication with the WWF to determine the preferred attachment method used in previous installations and will incorporate best practices into our final design recommendations.
Foundation Placement: Flush or Raised?
Another important aspect of the project is determining whether the stones will sit flush on the foundation or be placed on a pedestal above the flatwork. This decision will impact the overall aesthetic and durability of the memorial. We are currently working with project stakeholders to finalize this detail, ensuring the design aligns with both functional and visual considerations.
Next Steps
The Gold Star Memorial will require a Building Permit from the City of Rancho Cucamonga, and the project will be reviewed by the Building & Safety Department. To support this process, ISE has also reviewed a Geo Tech report from 2003 that was prepared during the construction of the adjacent Community Center. This information will help guide our final foundation design to accommodate local soil conditions and load-bearing requirements.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Diversified Pacific, WWF, and other partners to bring this tribute to life. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
ISE Structural Engineers is privileged to play a role in honoring the sacrifice of Gold Star families, ensuring that this memorial stands strong for generations to come.
